Set Your Internal GPS Properly & Arrive At Your Intended Destination
4 Minute Read
Not many things in tech today translate to orienting a life pursuit quite as well as the idea of properly setting your GPS when you travel.
Regardless if the pursuit is personal, professional, spiritual or physical, "dropping a pin" on your destination is vitally important if you intend on arriving at the destination you want to. Beyond moving toward your intended destination, having the ability to reroute yourself along the way is predicated on knowing where you are going.
This is an interesting concept because it’s easy to see how this correlation works in life as well as on Waze. But, in life we don't have the luxury of an address to drop in at the beginning of the journey, so how exactly are we supposed to know the proper orientation at the outset?
Young people lucky enough to have parents that help refine a vision or talent is a good way coupled with the willingness to listen allows someone in their youth to get a good sense of direction.
Yet, it isn't only young people that struggle knowing what direction to set off in at the beginning of a journey. Adults often begin journeys that are misguided because they don't have a clear destination in mind to properly navigate. Consider people that end up yo-yo dieting because they wanted to lose weight, but because they didn't have a well-defined destination either they quit before getting far on the journey or they lose the weight only to gain it back because they stopped at what they thought was their destination only to learn it was shortsighted and not well researched.
Very few times in life are we acutely aware of precisely where we want to end up without rerouting, altering or changing our destination during the journey. Although when those times do arrive from time to time, it is profound to have a reliable source to tap into that can help correct our course…much like when an offramp of the freeway is unexpectedly closed and Waze finds a new path to follow.
As an adult, being teachable is a big deal, this enables us to accept input from others or research to refine what destination you believe you want to find. Someone that surrounds themselves with a reliable community has a big advantage because others may have set out on similar journeys in the past that can help course correct more quickly or help see that changing your destination all together will save time, reduce effort and avoid pain. No doubt this takes self-awareness, because having another help you travel to your destination and not where they think you should go is important.
Attunement is a good term to learn whether we are attempting to properly set our own destination or help give clarity to someone else that is having trouble understanding where to "drop the pin" on the GPS of life. The meaning of Attunement is to bring into harmony. Do you know what will bring you into harmony? Are you able to see something that will move a friend or loved one closer to harmony?
We all know the frustration and pain of making decisions that were poorly conceived. Self-contempt can ravage due to time spent, money lost, and relationships sacrificed during the process.
After 53+ years of traveling toward many wrong destinations, I have learned to see the direction I am meant to be traveling with more clarity thanks to the help of others I trust. That has proved true personally, professionally, spiritually, physically, and relationally.
Setting your internal GPS is an axiom for all your travels in life, whether it is one for only today or your goal is a more overarching life pursuit. Do the best you can to prepare, be willing to get "on the road" but be flexible enough to follow directions when changes are necessary.
Most importantly, share the story of your journey with others so they can navigate through the difficult places of life with more confidence and joy.
